I never thought I would think football players are underpaid. I have much more empathy for football players and families after reading this & a better understanding of CTE! The photo of the brain blew my mind! These players will lead medicine in figuring out how to heal the brain & regenerate cells - once we recognize how much ALL players are effected by this & take It serious! CTE In our beloved players is a true public health issue!
Excellent article and information Kennedy. I applaud you for making a commitment to help these athletes. However, this problem and the "negative health and life impact" are a result of their chosen
occupation that is really a problem humans have tolerated and promoted for 1000's of years. These athletes are nothing more than "modern-day Gladiators" being forced to or put into a profession due to the economic and educational inequality in society then, as they are now. A gladiator or slave (modern day football players) only reason to fight is for the glory of the crowd and the owners is the same now as it was back then in many older cultures and nations. The entertainment of the extremely wealthy (owners, stadium suite owners and corporate sponsors) is and has always been provided by athletes life in exchange for some small economic benefits that in no way meets their risk of death or long-term healthcare expenses. This false sense of "economic freedom" athletes think they are receiving is nothing more than modern day "economic slavery" with a paycheck and performance bonuses.
Prevention is the key. Prevention can only be obtained - but not by just treating this social virus as a disease because it has corrupted humanity for centuries. We need to provide, promote and pursue real economic opportunities and access to the monetary system for these athletes, their parents, their friends, their community - in order to break away from the continual cycle and mindset that only knows - it's football so what else am I suppose to do.
Again, thank you for your insight and for being part of the solution.
